Aircraft Armament Systems – U.S. Air Force (USAF)

Aircraft Armament Systems Specialists in the U.S. Air Force (AFSC 2W1X1) are responsible for the maintenance, loading, and troubleshooting of weapons and munitions systems on Air Force aircraft. Their role ensures that fighter jets, bombers, and other aircraft are combat-ready.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Loading and Unloading Munitions: Handling missiles, bombs, and ammunition on aircraft.
  • Maintaining Weapons Systems: Inspecting and repairing bomb racks, missile launchers, and gun systems.
  • Testing Electronic & Mechanical Systems: Ensuring weapon release and targeting functions work correctly.
  • Safety & Compliance: Following strict protocols for handling explosives and maintaining aircraft readiness.
  • Supporting Combat Missions: Assisting in arming aircraft for deployments and exercises.

  • F-22 Raptor (air-to-air & air-to-ground weaponry)
  • F-35 Lightning II (stealth multirole fighter)
  • A-10 Thunderbolt II (GAU-8 Avenger cannon)
  • B-2 Spirit & B-52 Stratofortress (strategic bombers)
  • AC-130 Gunship (heavy firepower support)

Training & Requirements

1. Enlistment Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Normal color vision & depth perception
  • Secret security clearance required
  • ASVAB Score: Mechanical (M) ≥ 60

2. Basic Military Training (BMT)

  • Location: Lackland Air Force Base, Texas
  • Duration: 7.5 weeks

3. Technical Training

  • Location: Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas
  • Duration: ~ 86 days
  • Subjects: Munitions loading procedures Electrical and hydraulic systems of weapons Aircraft-specific armament operations
