Aircraft Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS)

Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS) improve a pilot’s ability to see in low visibility conditions, such as fog, rain, smoke, or darkness. EVS helps enhance situational awareness and improves safety during takeoff, landing, and taxiing.

1. Key Components of EVS

  • Infrared (IR) Camera – Captures heat signatures from terrain, runways, and obstacles.
  • Millimeter-Wave Radar – Penetrates fog and dust to detect obstacles.
  • Synthetic Vision System (SVS) – Uses GPS and terrain databases to generate a virtual landscape.
  • Head-Up Display (HUD) – Projects EVS imagery onto a transparent screen in front of the pilot.
  • Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) – Show EVS data alongside other flight information.

2. How EVS Improves Flight Safety

Enhanced Landing & Takeoff – Helps pilots see the runway and approach lights in poor visibility.
Improved Terrain Awareness – Detects mountains, obstacles, and terrain ahead.
Better Taxiing Visibility – Reduces risk of runway incursions in low visibility conditions.
Assists in Night Operations – Provides a clear view even in total darkness.

3. EVS vs. Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS)

  • EVS: Uses real-time infrared and radar imaging to show what’s ahead.
  • SVS: Uses stored GPS and terrain data to generate a simulated 3D view of the environment.
  • Combined Vision System (CVS): Some modern aircraft integrate EVS + SVS for maximum visibility.

4. Aircraft Using EVS

  • Commercial Jets (Boeing, Airbus, Gulfstream, Bombardier)
  • Military Aircraft (Fighter jets, transport planes)
  • Business & Private Jets (Gulfstream G650, Dassault Falcon)
