Aircraft Inverter Systems
An aircraft inverter system converts DC (Direct Current) power into AC (Alternating Current) to supply avionics, instruments, and electrical components that require AC power. Inverters are critical in aircraft that primarily use a DC electrical system but have AC-powered equipment.
1. Purpose of Aircraft Inverters
- Converts 28V DC or 14V DC into 115V AC or 26V AC (typically at 400 Hz frequency).
- Powers AC-dependent avionics, flight instruments, and electronic systems.
- Serves as a backup power source if the primary AC generator fails.
2. Types of Aircraft Inverters
A. Rotary Inverter (Motor-Generator Inverter)
- Uses an electric motor to spin an AC generator, producing AC power.
- Heavy and less efficient but historically reliable.
- Used in older aircraft and some military systems.
B. Static Inverter (Solid-State Inverter)
- Uses electronic circuits (transistors, MOSFETs) to convert DC to AC.
- Lighter, more efficient, and commonly used in modern aircraft.
- Found in commercial, general aviation, and military aircraft.
3. Aircraft Systems That Use Inverters
- Navigation & Avionics – Some instruments like gyroscopic compasses and attitude indicators.
- Autopilot & Flight Control Systems – Many rely on AC power.
- Lighting Systems – Certain aircraft interior and exterior lights.
- Radar & Communication Equipment – Some military and commercial aircraft radios.
- Backup Power – Emergency systems may require AC power from an inverter.
4. Inverter vs. Transformer-Rectifier Unit (TRU)
- Inverter: Converts DC to AC.
- TRU: Converts AC to DC (used in aircraft with AC primary power systems).
