Aircraft Power Systems

Aircraft power systems provide the electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic energy required to operate essential aircraft functions, including avionics, lighting, communication, and flight control systems. These systems are designed for reliability and redundancy to ensure safe operation in all flight conditions.

Types of Aircraft Power Systems

1. Electrical Power System

  • Supplies power to avionics, instruments, lighting, and other electronic systems.
  • Main Components: Generators/Alternators – Powered by engines or APU, generate AC/DC power. Batteries – Provide backup power during startup and emergencies. Bus Distribution System – Routes power to different aircraft systems. Transformers/Rectifiers/Inverters – Convert power as needed (AC/DC).

2. Hydraulic Power System

  • Powers landing gear, brakes, flight controls, and cargo doors.
  • Main Components: Hydraulic Pumps – Powered by engines, APU, or electric motors. Reservoirs & Accumulators – Store and regulate hydraulic fluid. Valves & Actuators – Control pressure and movement of hydraulic components.

3. Pneumatic Power System

  • Provides compressed air for cabin pressurization, anti-icing, engine starting, and some flight controls.
  • Main Components: Bleed Air System – Takes air from engines or APU. Compressors & Regulators – Control air pressure and distribution. Air Distribution System – Directs airflow to necessary components.

4. Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)

  • A small engine that provides electrical and pneumatic power when main engines are off.
  • Used during ground operations and as a backup in flight.

Power System Redundancy & Safety

  • Backup Batteries – Maintain power if generators fail.
  • Multiple Generators – Ensures continued operation if one fails.
  • Emergency Power Sources – Ram air turbine (RAT) or emergency generators on large aircraft.
  • Circuit Protection – Fuses, breakers, and monitoring systems prevent overloads.
