Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Training Guide

An Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate is the highest level of pilot certification, required to act as a captain or first officer for airlines. To achieve this, you must complete an ATP training program, accumulate sufficient flight experience, and pass the FAA ATP check ride.

1. ATP Certificate Requirements

Before enrolling in an ATP training program, you must meet the following requirements:

Age: Minimum 23 years old (can take the written exam at 21).
Medical: Hold an FAA First-Class Medical Certificate.
Flight Experience: Accumulate at least 1,500 total flight hours, including:

  • 500 hours cross-country
  • 100 hours night flight
  • 75 hours instrument flight
  • 250 hours as pilot-in-command (PIC)
Ratings: Hold a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with an Instrument Rating.
ATP-CTP Course: Complete the Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP).

2. Steps to Obtain ATP Certification

Step 1: Enroll in an ATP Flight Training Program

  • Choose an FAA-approved ATP training program or airline cadet program.
  • Some airlines offer pathway programs to help pilots get ATP-certified.

Step 2: Complete ATP-CTP (Certification Training Program)

  • 30 hours of ground school covering airline operations, aerodynamics, weather, high-altitude flight, and crew resource management.
  • 10 hours of full-motion simulator training on transport-category aircraft.
  • After completing ATP-CTP, you can take the FAA ATP Knowledge Test.

Step 3: Build Flight Hours

  • Many pilots work as flight instructors, cargo pilots, or corporate pilots to gain 1,500 flight hours.
  • Military pilots and graduates from specific FAA-approved programs may qualify for reduced ATP flight hour requirements.

Step 4: Take the ATP Check Ride

  • Once you meet all experience requirements, schedule a check ride with an FAA examiner.
  • The check ride consists of an oral exam and flight test.

3. Top ATP Flight Training Programs

Here are some FAA-approved ATP training programs in the U.S.:

Independent Flight Schools

ATP Flight School – One of the largest flight schools with airline partnerships.
FlightSafety International – Advanced training for corporate and airline pilots.
CAE – Provides structured ATP training with airline sponsorships.

Airline Cadet Programs (Pathway to ATP)

Delta Propel Program – Delta’s pilot development program.
United Aviate Academy – Direct pathway to United Airlines.
American Airlines Cadet Academy – Structured training for future AA pilots.
Spirit Direct Program – ATP training with a guaranteed first officer job at Spirit Airlines.

4. Cost & Duration of ATP Training

  • ATP-CTP Course: $3,000 – $8,000 (5–7 days).
  • Full ATP Training (Zero to ATP): $80,000 – $150,000 (12–24 months).
  • Flight Hour Building: Costs vary based on how you accumulate hours (e.g., flight instruction, charter flying, regional airline FO programs).

5. Financing & Scholarships

  • Airline Sponsorships: Some airlines offer tuition reimbursement or direct ATP training.
  • Student Loans: Available for approved flight schools.
  • VA Benefits: Veterans can use GI Bill benefits for ATP training.
  • Scholarships: Organizations like AOPA, Women in Aviation, and the EAA offer funding.
