ADVANCE FLYING ACADEMY
A Civilian Pilot Training Program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career as a private or commercial pilot without enrolling in a military program. These programs are typically offered by flight schools, universities, or specialized aviation training organizations. The programs can range from basic private pilot training to more advanced commercial pilot or airline transport pilot certifications.
Here’s an overview of what a civilian pilot training program might include:
1. Private Pilot License (PPL)
- Duration: Typically 3–6 months.
- Requirements:
- Minimum of 40 hours of flight time (20 hours of dual instruction and 10 hours of solo flight).
- Ground school training on aviation theory, regulations, meteorology, navigation, etc.
- Pass a medical exam.
- Written exam and practical flight test (checkride).
- Outcome: This allows you to fly privately, carry passengers, but not for compensation.
2. Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
- Duration: Typically 6 months to a year (after obtaining PPL).
- Requirements:
- Minimum of 250 hours of total flight time.
- More advanced flight maneuvers and night flying.
- Knowledge of advanced aviation topics.
- Written and practical exams.
- Outcome: You can get paid for your flying services, and it qualifies you to fly for airlines or charter companies.
3. Flight Instructor (CFI)
- Duration: Several months after obtaining a CPL.
- Requirements:
- A Certified Flight Instructor license allows you to teach others how to fly.
- Requires additional training, including an instructor certificate and a flight instructor exam.
- Outcome: You can teach student pilots, helping them obtain their licenses while gaining flying hours.
4. Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)
- Duration: 1–2 years after obtaining a CPL.
- Requirements:
- Minimum of 1,500 total flight hours.
- Knowledge of airline operations, flight planning, and regulations.
- Advanced written and practical exams.
- Outcome: This is the highest level of pilot certification, and it’s required to be a captain for commercial airlines.
Civilian Pilot Training Programs in the U.S.

- University Programs: Several universities offer aviation degrees that include pilot training, such as University of North Dakota, Arizona State University, and Purdue University.
- Government Funding/Grants: Some training programs may be eligible for veteran benefits or government-funded programs like the GI Bill.
Financial Aid for Civilian Pilot Training
- FAA Grants: Some training programs are eligible for FAA grants.
- Private Loans: Aviation students can also apply for private loans, which are often offered by banks or other financial institutions.
