FAA solo flight requirements

To fly solo as a student pilot under the FAA regulations, you must meet specific requirements:

FAA solo flight requirements

1. Eligibility:

  • Age: At least 17 years old.
  • Language: Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English.
  • Medical Certificate: Hold at least a third-class medical certificate issued by an FAA-authorized medical examiner.

2. Flight Training:

  • Flight Instruction: You must have received flight training from a certified flight instructor (CFI) for the specific aircraft in which you intend to fly.
  • Competency: Demonstrate the necessary flying skills to the CFI, which includes but is not limited to, takeoffs, landings, traffic patterns, emergency procedures, and other required maneuvers.

3. Endorsement:

  • You must receive a solo flight endorsement from your CFI. This endorsement confirms that the instructor believes you are proficient and safe to fly solo. The endorsement must be specific to the aircraft you're flying and must be valid for 90 days.

4. Solo Limitations:

  • Aircraft Type: You can only fly the aircraft that the CFI has endorsed you for.
  • Conditions: The CFI may place certain limitations on your solo flights, such as:
    • Flying only during daylight hours.
    • Staying within a certain distance from the airport.
    • Not flying in adverse weather conditions.

5. No Passengers or Compensation:

  • You are not permitted to carry passengers or fly for compensation or hire while operating as a student pilot.

Once you meet these requirements and receive the necessary endorsement, you can fly solo. It's important to remember that the CFI can revoke your solo privileges at any time if they believe you are not prepared or safe to fly.
