Learning to fly an airplane involves both ground school and flight training. Here's a step-by-step guide to getting started:
Step 1: Determine Your Goal
Decide whether you want to fly for fun (Private Pilot License - PPL) or as a career (Commercial Pilot License - CPL).
Step 2: Meet Basic Requirements
- Age: Usually 16+ for student pilots, 17+ for PPL, and 18+ for CPL.
- Medical: Get a medical certificate from an aviation-approved doctor.
Step 3: Enroll in a Flight School
Find a certified flight school near you. They will provide:
- Ground School: Learn theory (aerodynamics, navigation, weather, regulations, etc.).
- Flight Training: Hands-on flying with an instructor in real aircraft.
Step 4: Flight Training
- Pre-Flight Checks: Learn how to inspect an aircraft before takeoff.
- Basic Maneuvers: Taxiing, takeoff, turns, climbs, descents.
- Emergency Procedures: Handling engine failures, emergency landings.
- Navigation & Cross-Country Flights: Flying to different airports.
- Solo Flight: Once your instructor is confident, you’ll fly alone.
Step 5: Pass the Exams
- Written Exam: Tests your knowledge from ground school.
- Practical Exam (Check Ride): A flight test with an examiner to assess your flying skills.
Step 6: Get Your Pilot License
After passing all tests, you’ll receive your pilot license!
