 If you want to learn to fly, here’s a basic roadmap:

1. Decide Your Goal

  • Recreational flying – Sport or private pilot license (PPL).
  • Career as a pilot – Commercial pilot license (CPL) or airline transport pilot license (ATPL).

2. Meet the Requirements

  • Be at least 16 (for solo flights) or 17 (for a PPL).
  • Pass a medical exam (varies by country).
  • Speak and understand English.

3. Choose a Flight School

  • Find a local flight school (Part 61 or Part 141 in the U.S.).
  • Take a discovery flight to see if you enjoy it.

4. Ground School & Flight Training

  • Learn aerodynamics, navigation, weather, and regulations.
  • Log flight hours with an instructor.
  • Train in a simulator or real aircraft.

5. Pass Exams & Flight Test

  • Written knowledge test.
  • Practical flight test (check ride) with an examiner.
