In the United States, the minimum age to take flying lessons is 17 years old to obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL), as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
However, you can begin flying lessons earlier than that, as there is no minimum age for starting flight training. Many flight schools allow students to start lessons and begin accumulating flight hours before they reach the required age. You can take flying lessons, log hours, and even pass the written knowledge test before you turn 17, but you must be 17 to actually apply for and receive the Private Pilot Certificate.
Key Milestones:
-
Start flight training: You can begin taking lessons at any age, as long as the flight school permits it.
-
Solo flight: You can solo an aircraft when you are 16 years old (with permission from an instructor after meeting the necessary flight training requirements).
-
Private Pilot License (PPL): You must be 17 years old to apply for a Private Pilot License.
If you're interested in flying before you're 17, you can still gain a lot of experience and build your hours toward earning your PPL.
