Certified flight instructor medical requirements

ADVANCE FLYING ACADEMY

To become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), a candidate must meet the following medical requirements:

FAA Medical Certificate:
- You must hold at least a Second-Class Medical Certificate issued by an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner (AME).
- This certificate ensures that the applicant is physically fit to fly and meets the necessary health standards.
- First-Class Medical Certificate can also be acceptable if desired, though it is not a requirement for becoming a CFI.
Medical Standards:
- Vision: You must have 20/20 vision or correctable to 20/20, with the ability to perceive colors necessary for the safe performance of airman duties.
- Hearing: You must be able to understand a normal spoken conversation.
- General Health: No medical history or condition that would interfere with your ability to safely perform duties as a pilot. Common conditions evaluated include cardiovascular health, mental health, and neurological issues.
Special Conditions:
- If you have a medical condition that could affect your fitness to fly (e.g., epilepsy, substance abuse), you may be required to provide additional documentation or undergo further evaluation to obtain medical clearance.
Age and Certification:
- The Second-Class Medical Certificate is valid for 12 months if you're under 50 years old, and 6 months if you're 50 or older.

It is important to ensure you meet these health requirements before pursuing a CFI license. If you have specific medical concerns, it’s a good idea to consult with an AME early in the process to determine eligibility.
