A Certified Flight Instructor - Multi-Engine (CFI-MEI) is a flight instructor who has been specifically trained and certified to teach multi-engine aircraft operations. To become a CFI-MEI, you must first meet the requirements for a standard Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and then obtain the additional Multi-Engine Instructor Rating.
Here are the key steps to becoming a CFI-MEI:
1. Obtain a Private Pilot Certificate:
- You must first have a Private Pilot License (PPL) with both single-engine and multi-engine privileges.
2. Earn an Instrument Rating (optional but helpful):
- Although not mandatory for the CFI-MEI rating, having an Instrument Rating can be beneficial, as multi-engine aircraft often operate in more complex environments.
3. Obtain the Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Certificate:
- You must already hold a CFI certificate before pursuing the Multi-Engine Instructor rating.
- This involves meeting the standard CFI requirements, including written exams, flight training, and a check ride with an FAA examiner.
4. Accumulate Multi-Engine Flight Experience:
- You must have at least 5 hours of multi-engine flight training before you can begin teaching in multi-engine aircraft.
- You will also need to accumulate a minimum amount of dual and solo flight time in multi-engine aircraft as part of the MEI training program.
5. Enroll in a Multi-Engine Instructor Training Program:
- This is a specialized course that includes both ground school and flight training focused on the operation and teaching techniques specific to multi-engine aircraft.
- The training typically takes around 10-20 hours of flight instruction in a multi-engine aircraft, depending on your experience.
6. Pass the Written and Practical Tests:
- You’ll need to pass a written exam that covers multi-engine flight theory, systems, procedures, and the specific aspects of teaching multi-engine flying.
- You must also successfully complete a check ride with an FAA examiner, where you will demonstrate your ability to instruct in multi-engine aircraft, including emergency procedures like engine failure.
7. Meet Medical and Flight Hour Requirements:
- You must maintain the required medical certificate (at least a second-class medical certificate) to work as a CFI-MEI.
- Ensure you meet any flight hour requirements as outlined by the FAA for both the CFI and MEI ratings.
Benefits of Being a CFI-MEI:
- The ability to teach and mentor students in multi-engine aircraft.
- Opportunities to work for flight schools, charter companies, or airlines (as a stepping stone to commercial flying).
- The potential to increase your income and job prospects, as multi-engine ratings are often required for more advanced aviation jobs.
In summary, becoming a CFI-MEI requires holding a CFI certificate, completing multi-engine flight training, and passing both written and practical exams specific to multi-engine flight instruction. It’s a specialized and valuable certification for those looking to expand their instructional abilities.
