Certified flight instructor or certificated flight instructor

The terms Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) are often used interchangeably, but the correct terminology according to the FAA is Certificated Flight Instructor.

Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI):

  • The official term used by the FAA to describe a flight instructor who has been granted a certificate (authorization) to teach student pilots.
  • The word "certificated" indicates that the instructor holds a certificate issued by the FAA after meeting all the requirements.

Certified Flight Instructor (CFI):

  • This is a common but informal or colloquial way of referring to the Certificated Flight Instructor. It's widely used, but it’s technically not the correct terminology.

In practice, both terms refer to the same thing: an individual who has been authorized by the FAA to provide flight training to students.

Key Points:

  • Certificated is the correct term as it refers to the official FAA certification.
  • Certified is used more casually but refers to the same qualification.

So, while both terms are widely understood, if you're being precise, "Certificated Flight Instructor" is the accurate terminology.
