In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets the flight hour requirements for obtaining a Commercial Pilot License (CPL). Below are the details:

FAA Commercial Pilot License (CPL) Requirements

1. Total Flight Hours

  • 250 total flight hours are required to obtain a Commercial Pilot License in the U.S.

2. Breakdown of Required Flight Hours

  • 100 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC): This is the time you are directly responsible for and control of the aircraft.
  • 50 hours of cross-country flight: Cross-country flight is defined as a flight that departs and returns to the same airport or a flight that is conducted over a distance of more than 50 nautical miles from the departure airport.
  • 10 hours of night flight: This must include at least 10 hours of flight time, with at least 5 hours of night training with an instructor and at least 1 night cross-country flight of at least 100 nautical miles total distance.
  • 20 hours of flight training with an instructor: These must cover various areas, including:
    • 10 hours of instrument training.
    • 2 hours of cross-country flight training.
    • 3 hours of night flight training, as mentioned above.
  • 10 hours of solo flight: This includes solo cross-country flights and solo time performing maneuvers.

3. Additional Requirements

  • Written Knowledge Exam: After completing the required training, you must pass a written exam that tests your knowledge of aviation topics, including regulations, navigation, weather, and aircraft systems.
  • Check Ride/Practical Test: After passing the written exam, you will undergo a check ride with an FAA examiner to demonstrate your flying skills, including handling the aircraft and performing maneuvers in various scenarios.

Summary of FAA CPL Requirements:

  • Total Flight Hours: 250 hours.
  • Pilot-in-Command (PIC): 100 hours.
  • Cross-Country Flight: 50 hours.
