Commercial pilot license hours

To obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL), the flight hours required vary depending on the country or aviation authority you are training under. However, the general requirements for the number of flight hours are as follows:

1. Minimum Flight Hours for a CPL

  • Total Flight Hours: A minimum of 200 flight hours is typically required to obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL). This includes:
    • 100 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC): These are the hours you are the pilot responsible for the aircraft.
    • 20 hours of Cross-Country Flight: A cross-country flight generally means a flight that covers a distance of more than 50 nautical miles (approximately 93 kilometers) from the departure airport.
    • 10 hours of Night Flight: A portion of the required flight hours must be conducted at night, under visual flight rules (VFR), to ensure you are capable of flying in different conditions.

2. Specific Requirements for Different Areas

  • In the U.S. (FAA Requirements):
    • A minimum of 250 hours is required, which includes:
      • 100 hours of Pilot-in-Command (PIC) flight time.
      • 50 hours of cross-country flight time.
      • 10 hours of night flight time.
      • 20 hours of flight training with an instructor.
  • In the UK (CAA Requirements):
    • A minimum of 150 hours of total flight time, including:
      • 100 hours of Pilot-in-Command.
      • 10 hours of cross-country flying.
      • 5 hours of night flying.
  • In Hong Kong (CAD Requirements):
    • 200 hours of total flight time, which is typical and similar to the general international standards. This includes the required hours of cross-country and night flying.

3. Types of Flight Hours that Count

  • Dual Instruction: Flight hours with an instructor (also called dual hours) count towards the total.
  • Solo Flight: Time spent flying alone (solo hours) also counts towards the total flight hours, as long as you are the Pilot-in-Command.
  • Cross-Country: These are flights between two different airports. It can be either solo or with an instructor.
  • Night Flight: These hours are required to ensure proficiency in flying under night conditions.

4. Additional Considerations

  • While 200 hours is the baseline, many pilots will often accumulate more flight hours during their training.
  • The specific hours required for certain ratings (such as instrument ratings or multi-engine ratings) may also contribute to the total time.
  • Some flight schools or flying clubs may offer more advanced or specialized training that can influence how hours are logged.

Summary

  • The general requirement is 200 flight hours for a CPL, which includes:
    • 100 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC).
    • 20 hours of cross-country flight.
    • 10 hours of night flight time.
  • Always check with the local aviation authority (e.g., the Civil Aviation Department in Hong Kong or the FAA) for the exact requirements specific to your country.
