To obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), you must meet several requirements. Here’s an overview:

1. Age Requirement

  • You must be at least 18 years old.

2. Language Proficiency

  • You must be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.

3. Medical Certificate

  • You need to obtain at least a second-class medical certificate from an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner. This involves a physical examination to ensure you're fit to fly.

4. Pilot Certificate

  • You must already hold a Private Pilot License (PPL). The PPL is a prerequisite for the CPL.

5. Flight Hours

  • You must have a minimum of 250 hours of flight time, which includes:
    • 100 hours in powered aircraft, of which at least 50 hours must be in airplanes.
    • 100 hours as pilot-in-command (PIC).
    • 50 hours of cross-country flight time.
    • 20 hours of flight training with an instructor, including:
      • At least 10 hours of instrument training.
      • 10 hours of training in a complex aircraft (with retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable pitch propeller).
    • 10 hours of solo flight time.

6. Knowledge Test

  • You must pass a FAA written knowledge test that covers topics such as air law, navigation, weather, and flight operations.

7. Check Ride

  • After completing your flight training, you must pass a check ride (practical test) with an FAA examiner, where you demonstrate your ability to perform various maneuvers and tasks.

8. Experience

  • You must log specific flight experience, including:
    • 50 hours of cross-country flying as PIC.
    • 10 hours of night flight time, including at least one night cross-country flight of at least 100 miles.

9. Flight Training

  • You must complete training with a certified flight instructor or through an FAA-approved flight school.

10. Other Qualifications

  • You should have the ability to perform the duties required of a commercial pilot, which involves knowledge of aircraft systems, regulations, and safety protocols.

Once all these requirements are met, you’ll be issued your Commercial Pilot Certificate and can begin working as a commercial pilot.
