Flight school age requirements

The age requirements for flight schools are generally as follows:

Flight school age requirements
  1. Private Pilot License (PPL):

    • You must be at least 17 years old to obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL).
  2. Student Pilot:

    • You can begin flight training as a student pilot at any age, but you must be 17 years old to take the check ride and obtain a PPL.
  3. Commercial Pilot License (CPL):

    • You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL).
  4. Airline Transport Pilot License (ATP):

    • You must be at least 23 years old to obtain an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATP).

Additionally, while you can start flight training at a younger age (e.g., as early as 16 for some schools), you will still need to meet the minimum age for the specific license you're pursuing before you can officially hold the license.

For light sport aircraft (LSA) training, you can begin at 16 years old, but you need to be 17 years old to receive the actual LSA license.

Be sure to check with the specific flight school or training program, as they may have their own age-related guidelines.
