Instrument Ground Instructor (IGI) Exam

The Instrument Ground Instructor (IGI) Exam is part of the certification process for individuals who wish to provide ground instruction specifically for the Instrument Rating and instrument-related aeronautical knowledge. With an IGI certificate, you can teach students preparing for the Instrument Rating or provide instrument knowledge instruction for other pilot certifications.

1. Eligibility Requirements

Age: Be at least 18 years old.
Language Proficiency: Be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Knowledge Test: Pass the Instrument Ground Instructor Knowledge Test.
No Flight Experience Required: There are no flight or medical requirements to become an IGI.

2. Knowledge Test

Content:
- The IGI knowledge test contains 50 multiple-choice questions and focuses on instrument-specific topics such as:
  - Instrument flight rules (IFR) and procedures.
  - Navigation systems (VOR, GPS, RNAV, ILS, etc.).
  - Weather theory, reports, and forecasts for IFR operations.
  - Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) related to instrument flight.
  - Aeronautical decision-making for IFR operations.
  - Instructional techniques for instrument knowledge.
Time Limit: 2 hours.
Passing Score: 70% or higher.

3. Responsibilities of an IGI

Ground Instruction:
- Provide instrument-specific ground training for students pursuing the Instrument Rating.
- Assist with the aeronautical knowledge portions of Commercial and ATP certifications that require IFR knowledge.
Endorsements:
- Sign endorsements for the FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Exam.
Combination of Certificates:
- Many IGIs also pursue Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) certification to expand the scope of their teaching abilities.

4. Study Materials

- Instrument Flying Handbook (IFH).
- Instrument Procedures Handbook (IPH).
- Aviation Weather Handbook and Aviation Weather Services.
- Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (PHAK).
Instructional Techniques:
- Aviation Instructor’s Handbook for teaching methods.
Practice Tests:
- Use software like Gleim, Sporty’s, or ASA for test prep and practice exams.
FAA Knowledge Testing Supplement:
- Familiarize yourself with charts, diagrams, and figures used in the test.

5. Test Registration

Register for the IGI Knowledge Test at an FAA-authorized testing center (e.g., PSI).
Bring a government-issued photo ID and pay the testing fee (approximately $175).
Schedule the test online or by contacting the testing center.

6. Exam Strategy

Focus on understanding IFR procedures and regulatory requirements.
Study weather products specific to IFR operations, like METARs, TAFs, and en route weather charts.
Practice using navigation systems (VORs, GPS, ILS) and interpreting approach plates.
Pay special attention to areas that involve instrument-specific decision-making.

7. Renewal and Validity

The IGI certificate does not expire, but maintaining current knowledge of FAA regulations and procedures is crucial.
