Multi-Engine Rating Written Exam
The Multi-Engine Rating does not have a dedicated FAA written exam. Instead, the knowledge requirements are evaluated during ground training and the practical test (checkride). The multi-engine rating is considered an add-on to an existing pilot certificate, so you'll focus on the unique aspects of multi-engine operations during your training.
Topics Covered in Multi-Engine Training
While there’s no written exam, you’ll need a strong understanding of the following concepts, which may be assessed orally during your practical test:
1. Aerodynamics and Performance
- Single-Engine Aerodynamics (Critical Engine):
- Effects of losing one engine (asymmetric thrust and control challenges).
- Factors determining the critical engine (P-factor, accelerated slipstream, torque, and spiraling slipstream).
- V-speeds:
- Vmc (minimum control speed).
- Vyse (best single-engine rate of climb).
- Vr (rotation speed), V1, V2 (for turbine-powered aircraft).
- Performance Charts:
- Multi-engine weight and balance.
- Takeoff distance, climb performance, and single-engine service ceiling.
2. Systems Knowledge
- Engines, propellers, fuel systems, and electrical systems specific to your multi-engine aircraft.
- Propeller feathering and unfeathering procedures.
- Landing gear (retractable gear operation).
- Cross-feed fuel operations.
3. Flight Maneuvers and Procedures
- Single-Engine Operations:
- Recognizing engine failure and completing the appropriate checklist.
- Securing the inoperative engine.
- Maintaining directional control and optimizing performance.
- Normal and Abnormal Operations:
- Multi-engine takeoffs, landings, and go-arounds.
- Engine-out approaches and landings.
- Emergency Procedures:
- Fire, engine failures, and system malfunctions.
4. Weight and Balance
- How shifting weight impacts the center of gravity (CG) and performance.
- Implications for single-engine flight.
5. Regulations
- FARs pertaining to multi-engine operations, including:
- Part 61: Certification and training requirements.
- Part 91: Operational limitations and equipment requirements.
6. Decision-Making
- Evaluating the risks of continued flight with an engine inoperative.
- Using Aeronautical Decision-Making (ADM) in emergencies.
Preparing for the Oral Portion of the Checkride
Although there’s no written exam, your Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) will test your knowledge during the oral exam portion of the checkride. Preparation tips include:

Study Aircraft Manuals:
- Know the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) for your training aircraft inside and out.
- Memorize V-speeds and emergency checklists.

- FAA-H-8083-3A: Airplane Flying Handbook (Chapters on multi-engine operations).
- FAA-H-8083-25: Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge.

Practice Performance Calculations:
- Be confident with weight and balance and single-engine performance charts.

- Conduct mock oral exams and discuss common failure scenarios.
